Sunlight Is a Hormone Trigger. Treat It Like One.

Most people think about sunlight in the summer. Whether to wear SPF, whether to sit outside for lunch, whether they're getting enough vitamin D.
That framing misses almost everything important about what light actually does to the body โ€” and when it does it.
Sunlight isn't a nice-to-have. It's the primary signal regulating almost every system in your body. Get it right and everything downstream works better. Ignore it and no supplement stack in the world fully compensates.
What morning sunlight actually does
The first thirty minutes after waking are disproportionately important. Sunlight hitting the eyes โ€” not through a window, directly outside โ€” triggers a cascade that sets the tone for the entire day:
Cortisol rises sharply and cleanly, producing genuine alertness rather than the foggy half-state caffeine mimics
The circadian clock is anchored โ€” melatonin will rise at the correct time that evening, roughly 12 to 16 hours later
Serotonin production is stimulated, which is both a mood regulator and the precursor to melatonin
Dopamine receptors in the eye are activated, which research suggests supports long-term eye health and focus
Missing morning light doesn't just mean a slow start. It means the entire hormonal sequence for the day begins uncalibrated.
The Swedish problem
Living at this latitude means the equation is harder than it is for most of the world.
October through March, UVB is too weak to produce meaningful vitamin D regardless of how long you're outside
Winter mornings are dark well past the time most people are already at their desks
The instinct is to stay inside โ€” which compounds the problem
This doesn't mean sunlight becomes irrelevant in winter. The circadian anchoring effect works on visible light, not just UV. Getting outside in the morning even on grey, overcast days delivers a light signal orders of magnitude stronger than any indoor environment.
The body is more sensitive to the difference between inside and outside than most people realise. A bright indoor room might measure 500 lux. An overcast winter day outside is closer to 10,000. Direct summer sun exceeds 100,000.
The evening side of the same coin
Morning light sets the clock. Evening light disrupts it.
The same photoreceptors that register sunrise and produce morning alertness are still active at 10 p.m., still interpreting whatever wavelengths reach them, still reporting back to the master clock.
Natural light after sunset is essentially zero. The light most people are sitting under โ€” screens, LEDs, overhead lighting โ€” is not.
Getting sunlight in the morning and blocking artificial light in the evening are not two separate habits. They're two sides of the same circadian intervention. One sets the rhythm. The other lets it run.
